J.D. Buck Savage Police Training Videos

by Scott on June 4, 2009

The first police officer video training series I am aware of is Dave Smith’s Buck Savage Series. Many officers haven’t seen them so I posted them here. They are entertaining and it is interesting to see the basics of police work haven’t changed in 30 years.

Who is Buck Savage?

Buck Savage is a caricature of an inept and unsafe police officer.

He was developed as a police training tool in 1980 by Dave Smith who worked at the Arizona Department of Public Safety Training Division.

Dave later became the first Street Survival Instructor and worked at the Law Enforcement Training Network (LETN).

He currently works at Police One TV, still teaches Street Survival, and writes for Police magazine, PoliceOne.com, and the Calibre Press Newsline.

Make your own departmental training videos

These videos were cutting edge at the time and still hold up pretty well with age. However, they probably took some expensive equipment at that time to produce them.

Today’s camcorders and editing software are much cheaper so making your own departmental training videos is a viable option. With the current YouTube generation you probably have several officers that would jump at the chance to help.

I love Buck Savage! Those are some funny videos. I show some of them in my training classes for the academy.
