In my series, “Catch, Control, and Neutralize”, I discussed the best way to survive an armed attack. The best techniques involve harnessing your own natural “flinch” instincts and turning them into a defensive strategy. Here is a video that illustrates the points covered in my series.
After you watch the video, rewind it and watch it a second time. Pay attention to the officer’s natural instinct. He quickly grabbed the suspect’s arm and controlled the suspect’s weapon hand. There was no conscious decisions being made by the officer, he simply reacted to the threat based on his survival instinct. He caught the suspect’s weapon arm, controlled it, and then his partners neutralized the threat.

If this officer only practiced pushing off and drawing a firearm to deal with an armed attack, he would be in serious trouble. How many of you carry a firearm in the jail?
Outside the mat room, we only need a few simple techniques that will work with the vast majority of situations that we may encounter. Too many tools in the old tool bag can cause you to waste valuable time trying to select the appropriate one. Using a technique that is totally contrary to your body’s natural instincts can also cause a delay in your reaction to a threat. In the real world, a delay in your response can cost you your life.
