Oakland Tragedy Powerpoint From Orange County

by Scott on March 26, 2009

Below is a powerpoint that was sent out by Ed Nowicki from ILEETA. The powerpoint gives some preliminary information about the Oakland Tragedy by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. A historical setting slide refers to the BART shooting. For recent visitors to Spartan Cops, we keep an updated post about the current events and facts of the BART shooting including videos that captured the event. Just click on the link to visit it.

We appreciate ILEETA giving us permission to republish this slideshow. For those that are not members, ILEETA is the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association. They are an excellent organization we are members of and highly recommend joining. Click this on the link to go to the membership page of their website.

Update

The source of the powerpoint (not Ed Nowicki) needs me to get permission from Orange County Sheriff’s Department so I have pulled the powerpoint until I can get permission from them. I have called them tonight but was referred to a different division in the morning.

Further Update

After several phone calls, I was finally able to reach Thomas Gallivan at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department who politely emailed me:

Hi Scott, This power point was produced and intended solely for the use by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Unfortunately it has been sent all over the County without authorization. At this time we are not granting permission for this power point to be used or posted outside of our department. Thank you for taking the time to ask.

If this is the same one I’ve heard about, it doesn’t really provide much insight into anything that people haven’t already heard/surmised.

We discussed a few things from this power point at roll call.

1) Keep eyes on the stop.
2) If you have containment. Slow down. Wait.
Flashbangs may not work if the suspect is truly barricaded.
3) A dedicated opponent is a dangerous opponent.
4) You cannot eliminate deadly funnels of fires on entry.
