Popular Gloves for Police Officers by Mechanix Wear

by Matt on February 6, 2009

I have about five pairs of gloves in my duty bag, and I do not really like any of them. Working patrol, I need a tight fitting glove that allows me to get a good grip on my gun. I have to be able to manipulate my radio, computer, cell phone and other pieces of equipment with small buttons. I do not ever wear heavily insulated gloves, mainly because of the bulk but also because it does not get too cold in Texas.

I have noticed that more and more officers are beginning to wear Mechanix Wear gloves. The guys that I work with bought their gloves at Walmart. The only problem with the model of Mechanix gloves that Walmart carries, is that their model has large white writing all across the back of the glove. To combat this, several of the officers bought spray paint and painted over the white lettering to make them more stealthy. I was planning on doing the same thing, but luckily Walmart did not carry my size (small).

I surfed the internet and quickly discovered that the gloves are offered in a “covert” model that does not have all of the white lettering. I also found a model that has special rubberized ribs on the back of the hand and knuckles to cushion the hand in case of a hard impact with the ground. Because they are reasonably priced, I ordered both the original model and the impact resistant model, both in the covert (black) color. I will let you all know what I think of them after wearing them for several weeks.

Mechanix Wear is the official glove of NASCAR pit crews and was originally designed for mechanical work. They are supposedly very durable and well made. According to some of the former military guys at work, these gloves have become popular with the special ops community.

If you are interested in an economically priced pair of gloves for patrol work, you can order them from these links.

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve seen guys at work wearing them but I’ve been avoiding trying them because of the giant white logo all over.

I’m going to try a pair of the stealth. FYI they have a sizing chart for your hand here: http://www.mechanix.com/glove_sizing.pdf

It’s a PDF you print out and put your hand on to determine what size glove to order.

I kind of dismissed them because of the logos too. Ill have to take a closer look.

I have some of the covert mechanix. I liked them for a while, but in the end I found them much too bulky to be usable. Hatch Operator Shortys are my current glove of choice. They now make the Operators in several different “models” (plastic knuckles, etc).

Underarmour cold gear gloves were nice, for a while… but their tacky grips wear off quickly, making it so you drop about 90% of what you pick up.
