A Must Read For Police Supervisors: The Oakland After Action Report

by Scott on January 13, 2010

The After Action Report about the Oakland Tragedy should be required reading for police supervisors. (Oakland After Action Report Download)

It is the most candid report on a police department’s critical incident response that I have ever seen.

What Can Be Learned

But it is important that Oakland and other police departments take a look at these incidents and learn the lessons that they provide so that other officers may survive if similar circumstances present themselves.

In March, I wrote these words and now almost a year later we have the best viewpoint on those lessons.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure that it was ever going to publically happen. Police departments and the high ranking officers inside them have a tremendous capacity to defuse blame. After an incident like this the machine kicks into high gear. Typically the only way you can find out the real deal is if you know someone in the department close to the action. Most of us just get rumors of what really happened and always wonder if the rumors are true.

It is an incredible testiment to the Oakland Police Department leadership that they took an honest look at what occurred and made it public. Take advantage of this rare opportunity and read the report. Better yet, print it, make copies, and pass it out to others in your department so the same mistakes can be avoided.

Media Followup

Dean Scoville has done an excellent job following this story over the past year. In a time when media is constantly chasing the “breaking news” and ignoring what happens a few days later, Scoville has continued to focus on what is important and reported this incident with an incredible amount of depth. His work on this incident is by far the best reporting Police Magazine has done in the last year.

I don’t know how this post slipped past me Scott, but I am going to recommend this to my Capt. as a manditory read for all of our patrol lieutenants and sergeants.

This is a very important service oakland has provided to ALL of us and it shouldn’t be ignored.
