Reality Training Videos by Dave Smith on Police One TV

by Scott on June 15, 2009

As video cameras have become common in squad cars and businesses we are now able to see what happens during critical incidents. Reviewing them allow us to learn the lessons that were often paid for by an officer’s life.

Dave Smith started doing this with his Buck Savage series. Now he is using actual incidents, some famous in police training, and gives commentary throughout the video about what is happening and tips for responding to similar situations . His experience researching and studying officer safety issues gives him some excellent perspective about common errors and issues concerning police use of force.

These videos are excellent for lineup training. They are short, between five to ten minutes long. After showing the video, discuss the incident with your officers and apply your own policies and procedures explaining what a proper response would look like. What makes departmental policies valid is training on them. Applying them to these situations reinforces the policies and helps officers visualize how to apply them.

Remember that routine kills and these 17 videos can refocus our attention to important officer safety issues. Each link in the list below goes to a video with the same title. The question below the link is the general topic for that video.
