Staying Current in Police Work

by Scott on January 1, 2009

Police work encompasses a wide span of roles and duties.  Even the most basic police officer has to know and understand:

  1. the law- local, state, federal, and case law
  2. investigation- of simple and complex crimes
  3. departmental procedures- which is usually a book the size of a major city’s Yellow Pages
  4. officer safety- tactics, weapons, how to win a fight.

Each of these topics change and develop over time due to new legal rulings, innovations, and technology. It is easy for an officer or department to fall behind. Devallis Rutledge makes the point in his article, Keeping Up With Case Law in Police Magazine, that many supervisors are operating on the basis of knowledge learned at the beginning of their career which is now 10, 15, or 20 years old. He advocates several resources as a solution:

  1. Professional Publications
  2. Roll-call Video Programs
  3. In-service Classes.

All of these are good solutions. However, he neglects to recommend the internet which over the next 5 years will become the most efficient and effective solution. Depending upon your effort, with the internet you will be able to stay:

  1. Up to date
  2. On the cutting edge, or
  3. On the bleeding edge of every topic in police work.

This is our first post and we offer this new blog as part of the solution. We hope it is helpful and you enjoy it.
