If you are forced to employ your knife as a back-up weapon in a deadly force situation, you need to be able to retain it. In this video, I go over the same basic technique that I demonstrated for handgun retention. Since our training time is limited, we need techniques that work in multiple scenarios. I have chosen this simple technique because it can be used to retain any type of weapon (handgun, pepper spray, Taser, baton, knife, etc.)
In this video, the suspect grabs my weapon hand with his strong hand. I reinforce my weapon hand and shoot my right elbow towards his body causing his elbow to bend. I then roll my weapon around and over the outside of his wrist. With the handle of my knife hooking over his wrist, I rotate the blade of my knife towards the suspect. This action causes the suspect to let go of my arm and places my knife in a position to stab the suspect in the torso. By grabbing the suspect by the neck with my left hand, I make it hard for him to back away from me as I stab him with my knife.
You may not need to follow through with a stab, but the option is there in case the suspect still poses a deadly force threat against you.
